چکیده

[1] We calculated the elasticity of (Mg,Fe)SiO3-perovskite, using the plane-wave pseudopotential method for a pressure range that encompasses the earth’s lower mantle. Adding 25 mol% FeSiO3 to the Mg endmember decreases the shear modulus by 6% at zero pressure and by 8% at core mantle boundary pressures. The bulk modulus is less affected by iron, increasing by 2% at zero pressure and by 1% at the base of the mantle. For the isotropically averaged wave velocities we find that the compressional wave velocity decreases by 4% independent of pressure and the shear wave velocity decreases by 6% and 7% at zero pressure and at 136 GPa, repectively. For the relative variation of shear to compressional velocities at constant pressure due to variations in Fe-content we find R = 1.6 at 136 GPa and for the relative variation of shear to bulk sound velocities we find x = 2.6 at 136 GPa.

Behavior of iron in (Mg,Fe)SiO3 post-perovskite assemblages at Mbar pressures

[1] The electronic environment of the iron sites in postperovskite (PPv) structured (Fe,Mg)SiO3 has been measured in-situ at 1.12 and 1.19 Mbar at room temperature using Fe synchrotron Mössbauer spectroscopy. Evaluation of the time spectra reveals two distinct iron sites, which are well distinguished by their hyperfine fields. The dominant site is consistent with an Fe-like site in a high spin ...

A synchrotron Mössbauer spectroscopy study of (Mg,Fe)SiO3 perovskite up to 120 GPa

The electronic environment of the Fe nuclei in two silicate perovskite samples, Fe0.05Mg0.95SiO3 (Pv05) and Fe0.1Mg0.9SiO3 (Pv10), have been measured to 120 GPa and 75 GPa, respectively, at room temperature using diamond anvil cells and synchrotron Mössbauer spectroscopy (SMS). Such investigations of extremely small and dilute Fe-bearing samples have become possible through the development of S...

Elastic Properties of (MgX,Fe1-X)O Solid-solution at High Pressure

Ferropericlase, (Mg,Fe)O, is widely believed to be a major phase in the lower mantle of the Earth, coexisting with Mgrich silicate perovskite, (Mg,Fe,Al)SiO3. Experiments on Mg/Fe partitioning at high pressures suggest that the FeO content in this ferropericlase phase lies in the range 10-20 mol% for potential composition models of the Earth's mantle (e.g. [1]). To date, the elasticity measurem...

Pressure-induced transformations in deep mantle and core minerals

Recent experimental and theoretical studies provide new insight into the variety of high-pressure transformations in minerals that comprise the Earth’s deep mantle and core. Representative examples of reconstructive, displacive, electronic and magnetic transformations studied by new diamond-anvil cell techniques are examined. Despite reports for various transitions in (Mg,Fe)SiO3-perovskite, th...

The effect of iron spin transition on electrical conductivity of (Mg,Fe)O magnesiowüstite

We measured the electrical conductivity of Mg0.81Fe0.19O magnesiowüstite, one of the important minerals comprising Earth's lower mantle, at high pressures up to 135 GPa and 300 K in a diamond-anvil cell (DAC). The results demonstrate that the electrical conductivity increases with increasing pressure to about 60 GPa and exhibits anomalous behavior at higher pressures; it conversely decreases to...
